The initiative, which forms part of the Aurora project, will focus on the FEED phase, the initial design phase of the installation, and will be carried out by a consortium formed by ACCIONA, Sener and SLB Capturi.
The consortium formed by ACCIONA, Sener and SLB Capturi has been awarded, following a European tendering procedure, a two-phase contract to design and implement a CO₂ capture facility within the waste processing plant of AEB Amsterdam. SLB Capturi will participate in the project, named Aurora, and will be responsible for the design of the CO2 capture system, based on the company’s commercially proven technology.
The project will start with a FEED phase (Front End Engineering Design) during which a construction team, comprising the consortium, AEB and a project management consultancy, will further develop the design and execution strategy for the subsequent building of the installation.
AEB is a waste processing company that operates a separation plant, two incineration plants and a biomass plant in Westpoort, Amsterdam. The two waste incineration plants process approximately 1.4 million tonnes of waste annually, releasing nearly 550,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂. Through the Aurora project, these emissions will be captured using amine solvent-based technology. The captured CO₂ will then be permanently stored in a dedicated carbon storage field in the North Sea. Transportation and storage are not included within the consortium scope.
The project will bring AEB closer to its goal of capturing and storing around 0.5 million tonnes of CO₂ by 2028, reducing total emissions generated within the municipality of Amsterdam by 10%. In addition, the project will contribute to advancing in energy transition aligning with the European Union’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
