SLB Capturi is deploying its Mobile Test Unit to validate the carbon capture technology for this industry, aiming to derisk industrial-scale implementation.
Recycling & Waste, part of NG group, is taking a big step towards making its treatment process climate neutral by 2030. The company is set to deploy SLB Capturi’s carbon capture Mobile Test Unit (MTU) in Nyborg, Denmark, in the first half of 2025.
This ground-breaking pilot project will test the viability of building a full-scale plant capable of capturing approximately 145,000 tonnes of CO2 from the thermal treatment of around 180,000 tonnes of hazardous industrial waste annually. This waste is converted into district heating and electricity each year, providing about 80% of Nyborg’s district heating. In realizing its CO2 goal, the company will also contribute to a reduction of approximately 38% of Nyborg Municipality's total greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Recycling & Waste’s Head of Waste Management Services for Denmark, Jens Peter Rasmussen, stated: "The pilot project will show the direction and qualify the decision-making basis for our ambition to minimize the climate impact of the final treatment of industrial hazardous waste."
The pilot project will capture CO2 from two of the three rotary kiln lines at the Nyborg plant without disrupting current operations. This will be achieved using amine technology in a test plant that SLB Capturi has developed over almost 20 years. The technology will now demonstrate its potential for use with hazardous waste, which has a more varied composition compared to conventional incinerators.
SLB Capturi’s Director of Delivery Function & Aftermarket, Tove Ormevik, added: “We are looking forward to our collaboration with Recycling & Waste in Nyborg, expanding the use-case application of our technology to an additional industrial flue gas. Pilot projects like these provide valuable insights to derisk industrial-scale carbon capture deployment.”
